He designed many posters depicting Britain for British Railways and for the General Post Office. These exciting naturalistic posters brought him to prominence as a landscape painter.

Here is an original for a

British Rail poster and we have reproduced a copy of the poster on the left. The picture above was done in oil and was the original for this poster.

Jack started work as a shipping clerk in a company exporting heavy machinery to South Africa but by 1929 he began to paint full time for a living.

Important commissions were quick to come his way.

Exhibiting at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour (RI), Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI), Society of Marine Artists (SMA) later to become Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA), Pastel Society (PS)  Royal Society of British Artists and Royal West of England Academy, he was elected RI in 1944, PS in 1951, SMA in 1954 and ROI in 1959. He would have been the President of the RI but his death in 1968 prevented him from taking office.

This watercolour is on the back of the picture above, it is a watercolour sketch and Summer's Day is framed so that it can be viewed,  ie glass on both sides.
